Why ChatGPT Gives Your Business Generic Answers — and How to Fix It

Why ChatGPT gives generic business answers and how to fix them with Keystra Group
AI FOR SMALL BUSINESS

ChatGPT Gave You an Answer.
But It Wasn't Actually Useful.

Vague marketing ideas. Generic business advice. Suggestions that could apply to almost any company.

The problem usually isn't that AI has nothing to say. It's that it doesn't have enough direction.

If you've used ChatGPT for your business, you've probably seen answers like:

“Post consistently on social media.”

“Engage with your audience.”

“Offer excellent customer service.”

“Try email marketing.”

None of those suggestions are necessarily wrong.

They're just not very helpful when you're trying to decide what your business should actually do next.

So why does ChatGPT give generic answers?

Usually because the question is too broad, the business context is missing, the goal isn't clear, or the conversation stops too early.

THE CORE IDEA
Better Input → Better Direction → Better Output
REASON 01

Your Question Is Too Broad

Broad questions tend to produce broad answers.

Ask ChatGPT:

“How can I grow my business?”

That's an enormous question.

Growth could mean more customers, higher average order value, better retention, more website traffic, wholesale expansion, improved margins, new products or dozens of other things.

ChatGPT has to guess which direction you mean.

Make the job smaller and clearer.

TRY THIS INSTEAD

“My goal is to increase online sales from existing website traffic. Give me three areas I should investigate first, explain what information I should look at, and tell me which one you would prioritize.”

Now AI has a much clearer job.

REASON 02

ChatGPT Doesn't Know Enough About Your Business

Imagine hiring a consultant and saying:

“Tell me how to market my company.”

The consultant would probably ask questions first.

What do you sell? Who buys it? What have you tried? What is your budget? What makes you different?

AI needs context for the same reason.

Useful business context can include:

  • What you sell
  • Who your ideal customer is
  • Where and how you sell
  • Your current business goals
  • Your biggest challenge
  • Your budget or resource limitations
  • Your preferred brand voice

REASON 03

You Haven't Told AI What a Useful Answer Looks Like

“Give me ideas” leaves a lot open to interpretation.

Do you want three ideas or thirty? A quick brainstorm or a detailed implementation plan? Cheap ideas or high-budget strategies? Ideas you can implement today or long-term opportunities?

Tell ChatGPT what kind of answer you actually want.

ADD OUTPUT INSTRUCTIONS LIKE:

  • Give me only the top three recommendations.
  • Rank them by likely impact.
  • Explain why you chose each one.
  • Keep each recommendation within my budget.
  • Give me the first action for each recommendation.
  • Put the final plan into a checklist.

AI tends to become much more useful when it knows exactly what “useful” means to you.

REASON 04

You're Asking for Ideas Before Identifying the Problem

This is one of the biggest traps when using AI.

You ask for marketing ideas because sales are down.

But what if marketing isn't actually the problem?

Maybe people are reaching your website but not buying. Maybe customers don't understand your offer. Maybe your follow-up is weak. Maybe repeat customers aren't coming back.

What business problem am I actually trying to solve?

Then use AI to help you investigate that problem.

That's much more powerful than asking AI to generate another random list of tactics.

REASON 05

You're Stopping After the First Answer

This may be the easiest problem to fix.

ChatGPT gives you an answer.

You read it.

It isn't quite right.

And then you close the conversation.

Instead, keep working with it.

TRY THESE FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS
“This is too generic. Make it specific to the business information I gave you.”
“Which of these recommendations would you do first and why?”
“What information are you missing that would improve this answer?”
“Give me another option that requires less time and money.”
“Turn your recommendation into a 7-day action plan.”

Think of ChatGPT as a conversation, not a search box.

REASON 06

You're Asking AI to Make the Decision for You

AI can help you compare options, identify risks, organize information and think through a problem.

But you still know things about your business that AI doesn't.

You know your customers. You know your cash flow. You know your team. You know what you can realistically implement.

Use AI to improve the decision — not replace your judgment.

The strongest AI workflow combines AI's ability to analyze and generate options with your understanding of the real business.

THE FIX

A Better Way to Ask ChatGPT for Business Help

Before you send the next prompt, walk through this simple sequence.

01 Business Context
Tell AI enough about the business to understand the situation.
02 Problem
Define the specific business problem you want help solving.
03 Goal
Explain what result you are trying to achieve.
04 Constraints
Tell AI what it needs to work within — budget, time, resources or other limitations.
05 Desired Output
Tell AI exactly what kind of answer you want.
06 Refine
Continue the conversation until the recommendation is useful and realistic.
07 Take Action
Turn the final answer into a decision, checklist, task or next step.

See the Difference

Generic request:

“Give me ideas to get more customers.”

Better request:

“I own a small business that sells [product/service] to [customer]. Most customers currently find us through [channel]. My goal is to attract more new customers over the next 30 days without spending more than [$ amount]. Give me three realistic customer-acquisition strategies, rank them by likely impact and ease of implementation, and give me the first three actions for the strategy you recommend most.”

The second request gives AI much more to work with.

You still don't have to blindly accept the answer — but you've dramatically improved the starting point.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does ChatGPT give generic answers?

Generic answers often happen when a request is broad or when ChatGPT doesn't have enough context about your business, customer, goal or constraints. Giving AI clearer information and instructions can make the response more specific.

How do I make ChatGPT answers more specific?

Explain your business situation, define the problem you want to solve, provide relevant constraints and tell ChatGPT exactly what kind of output you want. You can also ask follow-up questions when the first answer is too broad.

Should I use the first answer ChatGPT gives me?

Not automatically. Treat the first answer as a starting point. Ask follow-up questions, challenge assumptions, request alternatives and use your own knowledge of the business before making important decisions.

Do better prompts always guarantee better answers?

No. AI can still make mistakes or provide recommendations that don't fit your circumstances. Better context and clearer instructions can improve the usefulness of a response, but important information should still be reviewed and verified.
