ChatGPT Isn't a Mind Reader.
If AI doesn't understand your business, your customers or what you're trying to accomplish, generic answers are exactly what you should expect.
Better context creates better conversations.
Maybe you've tried ChatGPT for your business and thought:
“These ideas are too generic.”
“That doesn't sound like my brand.”
“My business can't actually do that.”
“AI doesn't understand what I sell.”
The problem may not be ChatGPT.
The problem may be that you're asking it to help with a business it knows almost nothing about.
Learning how to make ChatGPT understand your business starts with giving it useful context before asking it to solve a problem.
SIMPLE RULE
Generic information → Generic answers
Tell ChatGPT What Your Business Actually Does
Start with the basics.
ChatGPT should know what you sell and how your business works before you ask it to create a marketing strategy, sales plan or customer communication.
Give AI information such as:
- What products or services you offer
- How customers buy from you
- Whether you sell online, locally, wholesale or through multiple channels
- Your general price range
- What makes your business different
- The stage your business is currently in
You don't need to write your entire company history.
You simply want AI to understand enough about your business to stop making assumptions.
Explain Who Your Customer Is
Your customer changes almost everything.
The marketing message for a first-time homeowner will look different from one written for a commercial property manager. A premium product needs different positioning than a bargain product.
Give ChatGPT enough information to understand who you're trying to reach.
USEFUL CUSTOMER CONTEXT:
- Who typically buys from you?
- What problem are they trying to solve?
- What do they care about most?
- What might make them hesitate to purchase?
- Where do they usually discover businesses like yours?
- What kind of language do they naturally use?
This helps AI create recommendations for your customer, not an imaginary generic customer.
Give ChatGPT Your Brand Voice
Have you ever asked AI to write something and immediately thought:
“I would never say that.”
That's usually a brand-context problem.
Tell ChatGPT how you want your business to sound.
FOR EXAMPLE:
“Our brand voice is friendly, practical and confident. We explain things clearly without sounding corporate. Avoid exaggerated claims, buzzwords and overly formal language. We want customers to feel like they are talking to a knowledgeable business owner who genuinely wants to help.”
Your instructions can be completely different.
The important part is telling AI what sounds like you and what doesn't.
Tell AI What You're Trying to Accomplish
Business context isn't only about what your business is.
ChatGPT also needs to understand where you're trying to go.
Your current goal might be:
- Getting more customers
- Increasing online sales
- Improving repeat purchases
- Creating content consistently
- Reducing repetitive work
- Building better systems
- Figuring out what to focus on next
Then explain what's currently getting in the way.
AI becomes much more useful when it understands both your goal and your constraint.
Tell ChatGPT About Your Constraints
This is an area many business owners forget.
An idea isn't useful if your business can't realistically implement it.
Useful constraints could include:
- Your advertising budget
- How many employees you have
- How much time you can realistically spend
- Technology you currently use
- Inventory or production limitations
- Things you are unwilling or unable to do
For example:
“Keep in mind that I run this business with a small team and I have approximately five hours per week to implement this strategy. Prioritize ideas that are realistic for those constraints.”
That one sentence can completely change the usefulness of the response.
Ask ChatGPT to Ask You Questions
You don't have to figure out every piece of context yourself.
One of the simplest things you can tell ChatGPT is:
“Before answering, ask me any questions you need to better understand my business and give me a useful recommendation.”
This turns the interaction into a conversation instead of forcing AI to guess.
If its first answer still feels generic, don't start over.
Tell it what is missing.

Why does ChatGPT give my business generic answers?
One common reason is missing context. If ChatGPT doesn't know what your business sells, who your customers are, what you're trying to accomplish or what limitations you have, it has to make assumptions when generating an answer.
What information should I give ChatGPT about my business?
Useful information can include what you sell, your ideal customer, your brand voice, current goals, challenges, available resources and any important constraints.
Do I need to explain my business every time I use ChatGPT?
Not necessarily. You can keep a reusable business-context summary and provide it whenever you begin a new conversation or whenever the AI needs additional context.
Should I give ChatGPT confidential business information?
Avoid sharing passwords, payment details, confidential credentials or other sensitive information that isn't necessary for the task. Give AI enough context to help without providing information it doesn't need.
